A new study has found that tadalafil, a powerful medication used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, was associated with a shorter life and higher rates of major cardiovascular disease.
The study, which was published in the journalCirculation, tested the hypothesis that tadalafil would increase sexual activity and lower risks of cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s disease and stroke, in men taking the drug. The study, led by the research associate Professor in the Department of Cardiology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, was funded by the Wellcome Trust.
Tadalafil, a compound medication designed to increase blood flow to the penis, is also known as PDE5 inhibitors. It works by relaxing the muscles of blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis when aroused. This helps men who struggle with erectile dysfunction to achieve and sustain an erection by increasing blood flow to the penis.
The research team from the University of North Carolina’s Pritzker School of Medicine found that the daily intake of tadalafil, a generic medication, was associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular events compared to the placebo group. This is the first study to directly test the effects of tadalafil on erectile dysfunction.
“This study provides evidence that tadalafil is associated with a reduced incidence of cardiovascular events and that this may have implications for health. The findings may also provide further support for cardiovascular risk reduction strategies,” said lead author Dr. David M. D’Amelio, MD, assistant professor of cardiovascular medicine at the Pritzker School of Medicine.
“This is the first study to directly test for tadalafil to prevent cardiovascular events in men taking the medication,” said lead investigator Dr. John D’Amelio, MPhC, a Cardiology specialist in the department of cardiology at the University of North Carolina’s Pritzker School of Medicine.
“This is the first study to directly test for the effects of tadalafil on cardiovascular risk,” Dr. John D’Amelio said. “We believe that the results of this study provide evidence that the combination of low-dose tadalafil and exercise in men with erectile dysfunction may be a better option for their overall cardiovascular health.”
The study, led by professor David D’Amelio at the University of North Carolina’s Pritzker School of Medicine, will be presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology in Chicago on Jan. 24-26, 2017.
